Andrew 'Grassi' Kelaher

Andrew 'Grassi' Kelaher Description

Andrew Grassi Kelaher began his artistic career at a very early age, exhibiting in group shows before reaching 10 years of age. He put his artistic skills and love of sailing to use at 14 years of age, designing and building his first racing dinghy. This passion and eye for design resulted in various State and National title winning boats, which Grassi designed, built and raced. Constantly in the water, either sailing or surfing, it might seem unusual to be called ‘Grassi’, however the name comes from a childhood nickname ‘Grasshopper’, which he uses to sign all his artworks.

After completing a Science degree in 1994 the lure of travel, skiing and snowboarding dominated Grassi’s attention. He travelled extensively through Canada and the US, always chasing the snow. On return, while working in the Australian ski fields, Grassi’s artistic flare resurfaced in the form of snow sculpting. Perisher Blue ski resort recognised these talents and employed him as Australia’s only professional snow sculptor. During this time a back injury caused several months of rehabilitation. To pass the days Grassi returned to his early interest in painting, creating soothing escapes on canvas. These new works provided the catalyst for Grassi’s return to a full-time artistic career.

His works continue to follow the idea of a dream location or a beautiful sensation. Using various techniques, a wide range of inspirational sources and many types of materials, Grassi creates images that please the senses - they are about beauty and loveliness, relaxing in a naïve and surreal landscape or soaking up vivid colours and earthy abstract textures. He considers the idea of a painting being something to visually escape into and explore.

Grassi has an impressive list of exhibitions, television and radio appearances and has won many awards. He work can be seen in corporate collections around Australia and in the US.

Andrew 'Grassi' Kelaher Statement

“I’m strongly influenced by Australian artists such as Brett Whiteley, Arthur Boyd and William Robinson, but I also employ ideas associated with post-modernism - artists throughout history have created the tools and now I get to use them to create artworks that I find interesting and enjoyable.”
