Artist and author Meredith Gaston's whimsical, heartfelt artworks have found places in high profile galleries, glossy magazines, and private collections worldwide. Meredith's greatest inspiration is finding the beauty and magic in seemingly simple, everyday things. She is passionate about expressing the tenderness of human emotions, and in capturing the way we interact with each other and the vibrant world around us. Meredith's use of bold, warm colours and her simple forms capture a childlike sense of wonderment, and harness the boundless potential of the imagination.
Meredith's second book with Penguin and her first solo project 'Tucked In' was released in March 2011. Balm for the world weary and nurturing for those having a 'doona day', 'Tucked In' features countless dreamy watercolours in conjunction with Meredith's homespun words.
This year Meredith has worked again on a hand illustrated series of calendars, cards and affirmation card box sets in support of the Breast Cancer Network of Australia. Available in Sussan stores around the country, Meredith's artistic contributions have so far raised eight five thousand dollars for the BCNA. In addition to her work with the BCNA, Meredith's artworks have been donated and auctioned off in support of the Wayside Chapel in Sydney, The national Bowel Cancer Foundation, Various childcare facilities in need around Australia, and the Australian Mitochondrial Disease Foundation.
This year Meredith has also gathered together an eclectic collection of wonderful artists around the world creating fine artworks for children. On the side of her own creative practise, Meredith now directs a delightful online gallery to inspire petite art lovers and the young at heart. Sharing in beautiful art from around the world provides Meredith with constant inspiration and excitement.
Currently ensconced in her inspiring Blue Mountains nest, Meredith is busy preparing for shows in Australia and abroad and is working on her third book with Penguin. When not in her studio Meredith can be found baking cakes, writing letters, and exploring her tangled beauty of a garden.
My new collection of works has been inspired the words of Albert Einstein who suggested that there are two ways to live life - one in which nothing is a miracle, and the other in which everything is! With this in mind, I've been creating bright, dreamy pieces as celebrations of every day love and life.
This body of work was a treat both in terms of form and subject. I am delighting in a new medium, gouache, which allows me to achieve that beautiful watercolour like feeling on larger canvasses and linens. It also has an incredible vibrancy about it too, making the colours almost pop! The simplified faces my figures, full of emotion, manifest tenderness as they interact with each other and their worlds. The bright, vibrant colours and naïve lines that I love capture a sense of joy and celebration. In appreciation for the beauty of springtime, this series draws on blossom pinks, sky blues, and various warm, rich tones inspired by the season.
The shy birds, talking tea cups, and other whimsical creatures and scenes in these works inspire my imagination. They encourage me to see that we share this earth and its many wonderful and magic mysteries. They also remind me that my life should never move too fast so as to miss the little miracles in every day. My philosophy holds to stay curious, enchanted and perhaps a little bit cheeky. As the old Guatemalan proverb goes – ‘Everyone is the age of their heart’.
