Kate Hudson Description

Kate Hudson is a Melbourne-based artist who specializes in limited edition linocut prints in both colour and black and white. Having trained as a textile designer at Central School of Art and Design in London, Kate freelanced in textiles for 6 years before she migrated to Australian in 1990.

Using objects and scenes from everyday life as her inspiration, Kate creates charmingly whimsical portraits of domestic bliss. A cat eying a pair of pigeons in a birdbath, or snoozing beside a colourful flower arrangement; assortments of garden tools and decorative teapots all feature in Kate’s narratives. The birds seen in her works are often visitors to her Eltham garden. Kate’s love of oriental art and training in textiles come together harmoniously in her compositions to celebrate the beauty in the simple pleasures of life.

Kate’s latest range of prints offers vintage-style flair to her artworks. Her use of geometric motifs, retro and shabby-chic crockery repeated in quilt-like patterns, native flowers arranged in old olive oil cans, and birds flitting around garden shrubs, give her fun and quirky artworks a homely warmth that remind the viewer of tea and biscuits at grandma’s house, and hide-and-seek in the garden.

Kate’s highly patterned and decorative prints have earned her numerous accolades, including her being awarded the Collie Print Trust Emerging Victorian Scholarship in 2005. Her instinctive use of balance in her compositions combined with a simple colour palette give her works a timeless elegance that will continue to be appreciated for many years to come.

Kate does all her drawings and block carving in her studio and prints on the wonderful old Albion and Columbian presses at the Australian Print Workshop in Fitzroy.
