Biography:

I started painting full-time at the age of twenty one and, by twenty five I had completed an Honours Degree at Monash University. Since then, I have been painting full-time for over twenty years.
My work has always been an exploration of the qualities of oil paint. I play around with the texture, drawn and washed line.
The human figure has also been a consistent subject in my work. The ‘Beauty Icon’ series has emerged in my work recently. Based on iconic women of the 1940’s and 1950’s, the woman is drawn in charcoal line and has long eyelashes and voluptuous lips.
I love the abstract qualities that my overlay of pattern provides the work. Patterns appear across the face, and emerge through the hair, seemingly extending beyond the canvas.
I create my works in the quiet of my studio, in my home.

Statement:

Beauty Icon Series
'She' has emerged in my work recently. The woman is drawn in charcoal line and based on women from the 40’s and 50’s. She has the long eyelashes and big lips. She is iconic of her time. She is combined with pattern, which is hand drawn, and sometimes the pattern is drawn and painted first with the figure drawn in charcoal afterwards. I love the abstract qualities that this gives to my work, with the patterns appearing across the face, through the hair etc. I always work in oils, using washes and applying paint using a palette knife to achieve textured affects. I love to paint and my time spent in my home studio.

Dancing In This Space Series
Many years ago, Monica Adams visited Paris and was entranced by the romantic beauty of the city. In her new series of work; Dance in this space, she once again revisits Paris and her vivid memories of the place. Her intention is to create a series of paintings based on a modern French bohemian ideal. Blue hues are introduced into red, deep browns and white colours. Laced patterns across the females dress, and layered into the background in reds, white, blue and brown become a strong visual statement. The dances dance, lean into a space; the space is filled with printed pattern that surrounds her. Beauty has always played a prominent role in Monica’s painting and that is again seen in this new work; beauty, space, thick oils and drawn expressive lines.

Flower Series
The first of the three series conceptualises the use of flowers in our lives as memory, for romance and to show we care in the special and tragic occasions of our lives. Flowers used in this format are often used as a sign of beauty and to cheer our mood. Flowers are used in these ways to intensify the spiritual side of our lives.

Child Series
This series combines the above commentary as well as a symbol of the child. The artworks represent the child in all of us through Angelic symbolism. Children offer us so much and often represent new beginnings and hope. Whilst the child may grow in so many directions, its intrinsic beauty will remain, even if hidden. Like the all encompassing Hindu word "OM (Aum)", the flowers falling around the child therefore represent all that has been, is, and will be.

Street Series
These works could be based on any area of the world, where people are busy going about their lives; off to work, the races, to visit a loved one or to the beach. I have tried to create a sense of timelessness with these works. Wherever the people are going, there must be some importance to themselves about their destination. In these times, we often lose our attention to the detail of our surroundings, whether it be nature or architecture. In an effort to depict this, I have combined elements of the previous series into the Street Series, and paid specific attention to the nature and architecture surrounding the people.
